Chapter One

The Death and Funeral of Richard Johnson

Bogota, Mississippi

1920

Darkness filled every corner of Elijah Creymark’s single-room cabin. Elijah and his two little brothers huddled with Mama by the kettle stove. None of them dared move an inch, or breathe too loud, and they certainly wouldn’t light a lantern to alert the terrors outside to their presence. Mama sang to ease their fear, a whispered hymn about going home. Pa peered out the window, his Winchester rifle at the ready. Elijah’s older brothers, David and Joe, stood behind him, gripping machetes in trembling hands. For some reason he didn’t know, Elijah looked out the window. Trees formed a high black wall around the cabin, and the night was thick as molasses. In the impenetrable dark, Elijah saw a child.

A little brown girl crept through the waving grass. Graceful as a firefly and just as frantic. A cold feeling clutched Elijah’s gut. The girl disappeared into the woods, swallowed by the darkness. Elijah cried and cried, pressing against Mama’s fat thigh. His mind stayed on the girl, praying she wouldn’t be lost for long. He listened to Mama’s song:
